Thomas was born on October 9th, 1859 in Ashton-under-Lyne and his baptism took place there on October 31st, 1858.1  Thomas' father was James Mather and his mother was Ann Dickinson. He had three brothers and a sister, named James, Joseph, John and Ellen.  He was the second oldest of the five children.
