John was born in 1825 in Pendleton and his baptism took place on July 17th, 1825 at St. Thomas (Pendleton).1 2  John's father was Henry Mather and his mother was Mary Howarth. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Robert, Henry, Richard, William, George, Sarah and Betsy.  He was the oldest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 30 in October 1855 in Salford.  He was buried on October 28th, 1855 in Pendleton.3

‌John and Ellen were married in a religious ceremony on June 22nd, 1847 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Eccles).4   They had a son and two daughters, named John, Mary and Mary.
