John was born in September 1841 in Birtle.1  John's father was John Walton and his mother was Sarah Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Joseph Mather and Ann (Hannah) Hindley. He had seven brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, James, Joshua, Thomas, Eli, Luke, Allen, Mary and Ellen.  He was the fifth oldest of the ten children.
