Thomas was born in 1844 in Halliwell.1  Thomas' father was John Walton and his mother was Sarah Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Joseph Mather and Ann (Hannah) Hindley. He had seven brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, James, Joshua, John, Eli, Luke, Allen, Mary and Ellen.  He was the fifth youngest of the ten children.
