Joshua was born in September 1839 in Walmersley.1  Joshua's father was John Walton and his mother was Sarah Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Joseph Mather and Ann (Hannah) Hindley. He had seven brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, James, John, Thomas, Eli, Luke, Allen, Mary and Ellen.  He was the fourth oldest of the ten children.
