James was born in 1837 in Middleton and his baptism took place on February 4th, 1838 at St. Leonard (Middleton).1  James' father was John Walton and his mother was Sarah Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Joseph Mather and Ann (Hannah) Hindley. He had seven brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, Joshua, John, Thomas, Eli, Luke, Allen, Mary and Ellen.  He was the third oldest of the ten children.
