Eli was born in 1849 in Sharples.1  Eli's father was John Walton and his mother was Sarah Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Joseph Mather and Ann (Hannah) Hindley. He had seven brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, James, Joshua, John, Thomas, Luke, Allen, Mary and Ellen.  He was the eighth oldest of the ten children.
