Mary was born in 1836 in Walmersley and her baptism took place on June 26th, 1836 at St. Leonard (Middleton).1  Mary's father was John Walton and her mother was Sarah Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were Joseph Mather and Ann (Hannah) Hindley. She had eight brothers and a sister, named Thomas, James, Joshua, John, Thomas, Eli, Luke, Allen and Ellen.  She was the second oldest of the ten children.
