Martha's father was Jeffery Mather and her mother was Martha Mather. Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Isabella Anderson; her maternal grandparents were James Mather and Mary Benet. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, George, Mary and Frances. She was the youngest of the five children.
