Frances' father was Jeffery Mather and her mother was Martha Mather. Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Isabella Anderson; her maternal grandparents were James Mather and Mary Benet. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, George, Mary and Martha. She was the third oldest of the five children.
