Thomas' father was Jeffery Mather and his mother was Martha Mather. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Isabella Anderson; his maternal grandparents were James Mather and Mary Benet. He had a brother and three sisters, named George, Mary, Frances and Martha. He was the second oldest of the five children.
