James was born in December 1792 in Tyldesley and his baptism took place on December 15th, 1792 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Leigh).1  James' father was Jeffery Mather and his mother was Mary Hampson.  His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Ann Whittle. He had a brother and three sisters, named Thomas, Hannah, Elizabeth and Ann.  He was the second youngest of the five children.  He died at the age of 23 in May 1816 in Lancashire.  He was buried on May 28th, 1816 in Tyldesley.2

‌James and Mary were married in a religious ceremony on March 30th, 1812 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Leigh) by Vicar Daniel Birkett and witnessed by Thomas Lees and Timothy Taylor.3   They had a son and a daughter, named John and Martha.  There are no more children.
