Jeffery was born on February 14th, 1763 in Windle and his baptism took place on March 12th, 1763 in St. Helens.1  Jeffery's father was John Mather and his mother was Ann Whittle. He had a sister named Betty.  He was the younger of the two children. He had four half-brothers and four half-sisters, named John, Richard, John, Jeffery, Lettice, Mary, Alice and Martha.  He died at the age of 55 in May 1818 in Tyldesley.  He was buried on May 21st, 1818.2

‌Jeffery and Mary were married in a religious ceremony on September 28th, 1783 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Leigh).  They had two sons and three daughters, named Thomas, James, Hannah, Elizabeth and Ann.
