John was born in December 1754 in Halliwell and his baptism took place on December 5th, 1754 at St. Mary (Deane).1  John's father was John Mather and his mother was Mary Meadowcroft. He had three brothers and four sisters, named John, Richard, Jeffery, Lettice, Mary, Alice and Martha. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Jeffery and Betty.
