Richard was born in 1761 in Manchester and his baptism took place on April 7th, 1761 in Cross Street (Presbyterian).1  Richard's father was John Mather and his mother was Mary. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Samuel, Benjamin, Joseph, Hannah, Elizabeth, Elizabeth and Elizabeth.  He was the fourth youngest of the eight known children.
