Samuel was born in 1748 in Manchester and his baptism took place on May 18th, 1748 in Cross Street (Presbyterian).1  Samuel's father was John Mather and his mother was Mary. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Benjamin, Richard, Joseph, Hannah, Elizabeth, Elizabeth and Elizabeth.  He was the second oldest of the eight known children.
