Elizabeth was born in 1769 in Manchester and her baptism took place on October 2nd, 1768 in Cross Street (Presbyterian).1  Elizabeth's father was John Mather and her mother was Mary. She had four brothers and three sisters, named Samuel, Benjamin, Richard, Joseph, Hannah, Elizabeth and Elizabeth.  She was the youngest of the eight known children.
