George's father was Joseph Mather and his mother was Ann Livsley. His paternal grandparents were Abraham Mather and Hannah Dale. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, George, Joseph, Sarah, Mary, Elizabeth and Anne. He was the youngest of the eight known children. He died before 1891 in Manchester.

  29 April 1849, George Mather (19) a mason, son of Joseph Mather a builder married Mary Ann Gee (24), daughter of George Gee, both of Everton at St George Everton. Elizabeth Mather was a witness.
