James' father was John Mather and his mother was Ann Harper. His paternal grandparents were Richard Mather and Betty (Elizabeth) Barlow. He had three brothers and six sisters, named Richard, John, Thomas, Ellen, Martha, Hannah, Hannah, Ann and Martha. He was the third oldest of the ten children.
