William's father was John Mather and his mother was Joanna Hilton. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, John, James, Richard, Alice, Elizabeth and Mary.  He was the fourth youngest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 57 in October 1795 in Whitefield.  He was buried on October 18th, 1795 in Prestwich.²
