Mary was born in July 1753 in Whitefield and her baptism took place on July 25th, 1753 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Prestwich).1  Mary's father was John Mather and her mother was Joanna Hilton. She had five brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, John, James, Richard, William, Alice and Elizabeth.  She was the youngest of the eight children.

‌Mary and James were married in a religious ceremony on August 6th, 1776 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Prestwich).2  The family line is yet to be completed.
