Richard was born in 1736 in Whitefield and his baptism took place on August 1st, 1736 in Prestwich.1  Richard's father was John Mather and his mother was Joanna Hilton. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, John, James, William, Alice, Elizabeth and Mary.  He was the fourth oldest of the eight children.
