Elizabeth was born in 1745 in Whitefield and her baptism took place on July 10th, 1745 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Prestwich).1  Elizabeth's father was John Mather and her mother was Joanna Hilton. She had five brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, John, James, Richard, William, Alice and Mary.  She was the seventh oldest of the eight children.
