Alice was born in 1741 in Whitefield and her baptism took place on January 30th, 1741 in Prestwich.1  Alice's father was John Mather and her mother was Joanna Hilton. She had five brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, John, James, Richard, William, Elizabeth and Mary.  She was the third youngest of the eight children.
