Samuel's father was William Mather and his mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Ingram.  His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Joanna Hilton. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, Richard, William, Mary and Margaret.  He was the youngest of the six children.
