Mary was born in 1766 in Whitefield and her baptism took place on November 9th, 1766 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Prestwich).1  Mary's father was William Mather and her mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Ingram.  Her paternal grandparents were John Mather and Joanna Hilton. She had four brothers and a sister, named Thomas, Richard, William, Samuel and Margaret.  She was the oldest of the six children.
