Nellie was born in December 1893 in Chorlton-cum-Hardy.1  Nellie's father was James Mather and her mother was Harriet Hill.  Her paternal grandparents were James Mather and Ann Dickinson. She had three brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, Ernest, James, Emily, Annie, Miriam and Hattie.  She was the sixth oldest of the eight children.
