Emily's father was James Mather and her mother was Harriet Hill. Her paternal grandparents were James Mather and Ann Dickinson. She had three brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, Ernest, James, Annie, Miriam, Nellie and Hattie. She was the oldest of the eight children. She died at the age of 7 in June 1887 in Chorlton-cum-Hardy.³
