Sarah's father was Henry Mather and her mother was Maria Duckworth (Thompson). Her paternal grandparents were James Mather and Margaret Stockton (Slater). She had five brothers and two sisters, named James, Samuel, Jesse, Ernest, Thompson, Margaret and Lottie. She was the third oldest of the eight children.
