James was born in December 1860 in Bolton.1  James' father was Henry Mather and his mother was Maria Duckworth (Thompson).  His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Margaret Stockton (Slater). He had four brothers and three sisters, named Samuel, Jesse, Ernest, Thompson, Margaret, Sarah and Lottie.  He was the oldest of the eight children.  He died at 3 months old in March 1861 in Bolton.2
