Mary was born in 1844 in Manchester.1  Mary's father was Jonathan Mather and her mother was Ann Wright. She had five brothers and two sisters, named John, Thomas, Jonathan, Henry, George, Fanny and Elizabeth.  She was the third youngest of the eight children.
