Lives with: In 1841, John and Ann Rigby (18 & 16) were at Castle Street, Atherton with (assumed) step-mother Betty (40). Other: Same person Neighbor: In 1841, brothers John and James Mather (20 & 14) were neighbours of Joseph Harden at Stoney Brow, Tottington Lower End, North Bury Reporting to: John is possibly the son of this John from Atherton, in which case the other son John is the wrong family 1779 James Mather James is possibly the son of Henry Mather of Pennington, born 1797.

James was from the town of Manchester when he married Ann (a widow) in Manchster Cathederal.

James was a Non-Conformist, having his son Joseph baptised at Tildsley Chapel.

1802-1812, baptims records show William, Alice, Ellen and Mary were probably born at Penington, Westleigh
~1772 Ann Oliver Ann was a widow from Manchester when she married James Mather 1802 William Mather 1804 Alice Mather Alice was born at Penington, West Leigh.  This was home of one of the ancient Mather families of the 15th cent. 1808 Ellen Mather 1812 Mary Mather 1799 - 1853 Joseph Harden 54 54 In 1839, Joseph Harden, Widower, crofter, son of Joseph Harden, a weaver, married Elizabeth Mather, widow, daughter of Robert France, collier at St Peter Bolton.  Both were living at Astley Bridge.

In 1841, Joseph and Elizabeth (40 & 45) were crofters at Stoney Brow, Tottington Lower End.  With them were Elizabeth's three children; Jane, John and James Mather  (28, 20 & 14)

In 1851, Joseph and Betty (49 & 60) were still crofters at Stone Brow, Tottington.  The children had left.

Joseph died at Tottington in 1853, aged 54.
1791 - 1874 Elizabeth (Betty) France 83 83 Elizabeth was the daughter of Robert France and Jane (Jenny) Stockley of Atherton, Leigh. Elizabeth had an older brother John who imigrated to the USA and a sister Ann.

On 31 Oct 1813, Betty France married John Mather (weaver) at Leigh.

On 11 Aug 1839, Joseph Harden, Widower, crofter, son of Joseph Harden, a weaver, married Elizabeth Mather, widow, daughter of Robert France, collier at St Peter Bolton.  Both were living at Astley Bridge.

In 1861, Betty "Harding" was with her son at Club Row, Tottington Lower End.

In 1841, Joseph and Elizabeth Harden (40 & 45) were crofters at Stoney Brow, Tottington Lower End.  With them were Elizabeth's three children; Jane, John and James Mather  (28, 20 & 14)

In 1871, "Betty "Hardy" (70), Mother and House Keeper was with John and Ellen and their adopted child Mary Shaw (4).

She seems to have taken the name Hardy (as in 1871) as buried by that name at Bury in 1874, aged 83.
1781 - 1835 John Mather 54 54 In 1813, John Mather married Elizabeth, daughter of Robert France and Jane France.  They already had a daughter Jane, born the year before.

John was a weaver when he married Elizabeth, but after that, an Engineer (Engine Man) at Atherton.  His daughter was in Sharples when she died in 1838 and was buried at Leigh.  It is assumed John was also buried there.  If so, he died 1835, aged 54, born about 1781 and may have been married before he married Elizabeth.

Dec 1835, died aged 54 in Little Bolton and buried at Leigh.
1821 John Mather In 1841, brothers John and James Mather (20 & 14) were neighbours of Joseph and Elizabeth Harden at Stoney Brow, Tottington Lower End, North Bury

31 Dec 1848, John Mather, Crofter of Tottington and son of John Mather an Engineer married Ellen Barnes.

In 1851, John (from Westleigh) and Ellen (30 & 27) were lodgers with William and Ann Howarth at Tottington Lower End.

In 1861, John and Ellen (40 & 37) were at Club Row, Tottington Lower End with his mother Betty Harding (69)

John became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was re-baptised 4 July 1841 at Tottington.

In Apr 1871, John and Ellen Mather (50 & 47) were at Dobbs Lane Head, Tottington with their adopted daughter Mary Shaw (aged 4).

18 Oct 1871, John Emigrated (to the USA? - tbc), was noted on LDS baptism record.  If he did go away, he came back!

In 1881, John and Ellen (60 & 57) are at 4 Spring View, Little Lever with their adopted daughter Mary Shaw (14).
1826 - 1848 James Mather 22 22 In 1841, brothers John and James Mather (20 & 14) were neighbours of Joseph and Elizabeth Harden at Stoney Brow, Tottington Lower End, North Bury
1812 Jane Mather Jane was baptised Jane France in 1812, a bastard child.  Her mother Elizabeth married John Mather, a weaver the following year.

Jane was 28 in 1841, living at Stoney Brow, Tottington with her mother Elizabeth (and step-father Joseph Harden).  She was gone by 1851, probably married (as no matching death).

The only marriage for Jane, daughter of John Mather is at Deane in 1843.  8 Oct 1843, Jane Mather, daughter of John Mather, a weaver, married John (weaver) son of John Wallis (brick maker), both of Rumworth.  This Jane was 32 in 1851 so probably it isnt her.
~1825 Ellen Barnes Ellen Barnes from Summerseat (near Bury) 1867 Mary Shaw In 1871, Mary Shaw, aged 4, was recorded as an adopted child of John and Ellen Mather, living at Dobbs Lane Head, Torrington Lower End. 1815 - 1816 John Mather 1 1 1752 - 1831 Nathan Mather 79 79 Nathan married Betty Green in 1781 and they lived at WestLeigh.  They had several children, but all appart from John died as infants.

Betty died about 1790 (tbc) and Nathan remarried Jane in 1793.  They continued to live at WestLeigh until after 1807 and then moved to Tyldsley, where Thomas was born in 1807.

In 1831, Nathan died at the Penington Workhouse.
1784 - 1785 Abraham Mather 10m 10m 1789 - 1789 Peggy Mather 7m 7m 1759 - 1821 Jane (Jenny) Birchenhead 62 62 Jane or Jenny Birchenhead (or more likely Birkenhead).  She was a widower when she married Nathan ()a Widow) in 1793. 1794 - 1868 Sarah Mather 74 74 Sarah did not marry John Gregory 1822 in Leigh.  That Sarah Mather was already a widow, so cant be this Sarah Mather.  It is more likely Sarah a spinster married Thomas Hough a widower in 1825.

In 1841, Sarah (50) and her brother Matthew (45) and his wife Jane and family were at Cheapside, Hyde, Stockport.

In 1851, Saraha Mather, 60, unmarried, born Westleigh, was a Washerwoman in Stockport with William and Mary Lomax.
1796 Betty Mather Betty probably married married Peter Roughley in 1822 or John Rigby in 1834 (both at Leigh). 1841 census confirms it was John Rigby. 1798 - 1846 Matthew Mather 48 48 In 1841, Sarah (50) and her brother Matthew (45) and his wife Jane (40) and family were at Cheapside, Hyde, Stockport.  Sarah and Matthew had Jane (15), Mary (15), William (14), Thomas (9), Matthey (6), Alice (3) and Eliza (1).

By 1851, Matthew had died and Jane (48, head) was at 18 Bowker Street, Hyde with Jane (26), Thomas (19), Matthew (14), Alice (12), Eliza (10), and John (8).
1804 - 1807 Abraham Mather 3 3 1807 Thomas Mather In 1851, Thomas (born Leigh) and Catherine (41 & 40) were at Bottom Croft, Wigan.  Thay had only just married in 1850.  Thomas was a widow, so must have been married before.

Thomas may have married Margaret Leigh in Pemberrton on 18 Oct 1841.  His father was Nathan Mather a miner, so possibly another family.  The 1836 marriage to Margaret Shelmerdine in Leigh seems more likely, although fathers were not recorded at this time.
1811 Catherine Hill In 1850, Catherine Hill was a widow when she married Thomas Mather. 1826 - 1905 Mary Ann Mooney 79 79 In 1851, Mary Ann Mooney (15, niece, born Liverpool) was with Thomas and Catherine in Wigan. 1781 - 1848 Henry Mather 67 67 Note: There is another Henry Mather of Leigh who married Betty Brown in 1799. She died at Atherton in July 1805 and then Henry Mather widower married Charlotte Sidlow in August. That Henry was buried at Atherton in 1832.

NOTE: Mary Mather was listed after Henry, whereas his sister Mary was younger. However, there is no marriage.  This is not the Henry Mather from Harwood, bap.1819.
1816 Mary Mather Daughter-in-law of Alice Mather, so possibly Henry's wife. 1831 Hannah Mather In 1841, Hannah (10) with parents and family at Lowton.

In 1852, Hannah may have married Richard Leigh (Civil marriage). However, there are no census records to support.
1846 Alice Rigby In 1861, Alice Rigby married John Bromiley 1841 Mary Ann Rigby Mary 1826 Ann Mather Missing in 1841

In 1851, Ann is Alice's dauhghter (not Henry's wife), aged 25.

Aged 16 in 1851, Alice "Mather", is daughter of John and Elizabeth, a silk finisher at Welch Hill, Pennington, WestLeigh.

1836 James Rigby 1832 Peter Rigby 1839 Ann Rigby 1841 Samuel Rigby 1823 John Rigby In 1841, John and Ann Rigby (18 & 16) were at Castle Street, Atherton with (assumed) step-mother Betty (40).

1825 Ann Rigby In 1841, John and Ann Rigby (18 & 16) were at Castle Street, Atherton with (assumed) step-mother Betty (40) 1819 - 1838 Ann Mather 19 19 In 1838, Ann Mather of Sharples, aged 19, died and was buried at St Mary, Leigh.  This is where her father John was buried.

There were no Mather births in Sharples in 1837-38, so she probably didnt die in childbirth, so childless.
1759 - 1793 Betty Green 34 34 In 1781, Betty Green married Nathan Mather

Betty must have died about 1792, as in Dec 1793, Nathan married Jane Birchenhead.  There is a death in 1789 for Betty Mather daughter of Mary Merredith of Bedfrod, Leigh.  Its unlikely this is Nathan's wife.  Nathan Mather of Westleigh had a still-born birth 11 Dec 1791, so his wife was still alive then.
1786 - 1788 Abraham Mather 2 2 Like his brother before him, this Abraham also died young.  Another Abraham came along in 1804. 1790 - 1866 Robert Mather 76 76 Robert of Farnworth (not Eccles)

There appears to be two groupings of children at Pennington, none with reoccuring names, so it is possible Henry married twice.
Betty Keele 1777 John Mather 1775 Catherine Mather 1772 Matty Mather 1771 - 1772 Matty Mather 1 1 1758 - 1854 Dorothy Magson 96 96 Dorothy is possibly Dorothy Magson, who married a Henry Mather, servant, both of Scampston Low Ground, at Rillington Parish, Yorkshire 2 Dec 1782.
