Joseph was born in March 1891 in Westhoughton.1  Joseph's father was Moses Mather and his mother was Ann Adamson.  His paternal grandparents were <unknown> and Catherine Mather. He had five brothers and three sisters, named James, Henry, William, Edward, John, Mary, Catherine and Alice.  He was the third oldest of the nine children.
