James was born on April 25th, 1886 in Westhoughton.1  James' father was Moses Mather and his mother was Ann Adamson.  His paternal grandparents were <unknown> and Catherine Mather. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Joseph, Henry, William, Edward, John, Mary, Catherine and Alice.  He was the oldest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 71 on July 4th, 1957 in Cleveleys.2
