John was born in June 1902 in Westhoughton.1  John's father was Moses Mather and his mother was Ann Adamson.  His paternal grandparents were <unknown> and Catherine Mather. He had five brothers and three sisters, named James, Joseph, Henry, William, Edward, Mary, Catherine and Alice.  He was the second youngest of the nine children.
