Mary was born in December 1888 in Westhoughton.1  Mary's father was Moses Mather and her mother was Ann Adamson.  Her paternal grandparents were <unknown> and Catherine Mather. She had six brothers and two sisters, named James, Joseph, Henry, William, Edward, John, Catherine and Alice.  She was the second oldest of the nine children.
