Joseph was born in 1795 in Westhoughton and his baptism took place on November 5th, 1795 at St. Bartholomew (Westhoughton).1  Joseph's father was William Mather and his mother was Mary Green. He had five brothers and four sisters, named Samuel, John, Jeffery, Henry, Moses, Alice, Ann, Mariann and Margaret.  He was the sixth oldest of the ten children.  He died at the age of 11 on April 8th, 1806 in Westhoughton.  His burial was on April 8th, 1806 at St. Bartholomew (Westhoughton).2
