John was born in 1863 in Ashton-in-Makerfield.1   John's father was Jacob Mather and his mother was Mary Ann Finnergan.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Mary Taylor. He had two sisters named Mary and Alice.  He was the oldest of the three children.
