Alice was born in 1870 in Ashton-in-Makerfield.1   Alice's father was Jacob Mather and her mother was Mary Ann Finnergan.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Mary Taylor. She had a brother and a sister, named John and Mary.  She was the youngest of the three children.
