Mary was born in 1867 in Ashton-in-Makerfield.1   Mary's father was Jacob Mather and her mother was Mary Ann Finnergan.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Mary Taylor. She had a brother and a sister, named John and Alice.  She was the second oldest of the three children.
