John's father was Robert Mather and his mother was Jane (Jenny) Sale.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Mary Mather. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Lambert, Richard, Mary, Betty and Catherine.  He was the second youngest of the seven children.  He died in June 1794 in Westhoughton.  He was buried on June 5th, 1794 at St. Mary (Deane).¹
