Dora's father was William Mather and her mother was Elizabeth Platt. Her paternal grandparents were William Mather and Margaret Smith. She had three brothers and five sisters, named James, William, John, Alice, Margaret, Mary, Jane and Edith. She was the eighth oldest of the nine children.
