Jane's father was William Mather and her mother was Elizabeth Platt. Her paternal grandparents were William Mather and Margaret Smith. She had three brothers and five sisters, named James, William, John, Alice, Margaret, Mary, Dora and Edith. She was the seventh oldest of the nine children.
