James' father was William Mather and his mother was Elizabeth Platt. His paternal grandparents were William Mather and Margaret Smith. He had two brothers and six sisters, named William, John, Alice, Margaret, Mary, Jane, Dora and Edith. He was the second oldest of the nine children.
