John's father was William Mather and his mother was Elizabeth Platt. His paternal grandparents were William Mather and Margaret Smith. He had two brothers and six sisters, named James, William, Alice, Margaret, Mary, Jane, Dora and Edith. He was the sixth oldest of the nine children. He died at 9 months old in December 1896 in Horwich.²
