James was born in 1868 in Westhoughton and his baptism took place on January 5th, 1868 at St. Bartholomew (Westhoughton).1 2  James' father was Edward Mather and his mother was Elizabeth Owen.  His paternal grandparents were Geffrey (Jeffery) Mather and Catherine Gregory. He had four brothers and two sisters, named John, Joseph, Thomas, William, Eliza and Betsy.  He was the second oldest of the seven children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named John and Martha.

‌James and Mary were married in a religious ceremony on March 24th, 1888 in Bolton.1  They had four sons and two daughters, named James, Herbert, Fred, Norman, Clara and Elizabeth.  There are no more children.
