Fred was born on May 28th, 1905 in Westhoughton and his baptism took place there on June 28th, 1905.1  Fred's father was James Mather and his mother was Mary Elizabeth Morris.  His paternal grandparents were Edward Mather and Elizabeth Owen. He had three brothers and two sisters, named James, Herbert, Norman, Clara and Elizabeth.  He was the second youngest of the six children.
