James was born in 1895 in Westhoughton.1  James' father was James Mather and his mother was Mary Elizabeth Morris.  His paternal grandparents were Edward Mather and Elizabeth Owen. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Herbert, Fred, Norman, Clara and Elizabeth.  He was the third oldest of the six children.
