Clara was born in 1889 in Westhoughton.1  Clara's father was James Mather and her mother was Mary Elizabeth Morris.  Her paternal grandparents were Edward Mather and Elizabeth Owen. She had four brothers and a sister, named James, Herbert, Fred, Norman and Elizabeth.  She was the oldest of the six children.
