John was born in 1866 in Atherton.1  John's father was Edward Mather and his mother was Elizabeth Owen.  His paternal grandparents were Geffrey (Jeffery) Mather and Catherine Gregory. He had four brothers and two sisters, named James, Joseph, Thomas, William, Eliza and Betsy.  He was the oldest of the seven children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named John and Martha.
